DWM - Corners

Do you back yourself into corners?

Exploding Pineapple
For someone who generally likes to plan, I find myself backed into corners of my own making more often than I want to admit.

Y'all will probably think I'm silly; but remember, I have that obsessive/compulsive side of my brain that wants demands order.

Here's the current corner (aside from the fact that my design wall is in a dark corner ...)

I started this version of Exploding Pineapple as class samples/step-outs, but liked the grey/yellow combo so much I decided to make a whole quilt.

While I intended to be random in my fabric choices for each block, my plan was to have half finish in grey and half finish in yellow so that I could alternate placement.  But some greys are light and some are dark, just as some yellows are light and some dark.

Greys from light to dark and somewhere in between
I am still working on the yellow half so I will contemplate how the lights and darks should be distributed as I work.  My initial thought is the darks should anchor the outside and the lightest go in the middle ...

In the meantime, I need to make some decisions about the sashing -- yellow or grey stripe down the center -- or something else altogether ...

Potential sashing
and the borders ...

Potential borders
The dark yellow on the left is not only ugly, but just the wrong shade of yellow, even though it's from the same Andover collection (Lilliana) as the black on the right and the gray at the bottom.  I would favor the black border print except that it is 8 inches wide and I think would dominate the quilt.  The gray at the bottom would need an inner border for separation (maybe a bit of the ugly yellow ...).

Decisions, decisions ....  I will post a tutorial tomorrow and perhaps will be able to tell you which direction I will take.  Stay tuned.

And hop over to Patchwork Times to see if anyone else gets into corners like I do.

  1. Personally I think the quilt looks great without sashing and borders. Just something else to consider.

    1. Thanks, Marlene. The manner of construction makes it difficult to get points to match - hence my desire for sashing. And I'm considering borders to get it bed size without making any more blocks. We'll see.

  2. I was just going to say that I like no-sashing, but now I read your reasoning nad understand. You may want to use something other than the plaid -- either you'll line it up (fussy cut) or you won't and one way or the other will bother the heck out of you. I like the yellow print on the left, but I'm evaluating it on the design rather than the tone of yellow. The Lib Quilters group had a post about this exploding pineapple technique. I hadn't heard about it until your post last week. BTW, Karen Hellaby has a YouTube video that shows how to do it (you may recall that I was puzzled by your description).

  3. Well, no one enjoys a good border dither more than I do...
I like the black print on the right, but with a narrow yellow inner border. Which would make the borders even wider. Which is either a good thing or a bad thing. Yeah, dithering.
Can't wait to see what you decide!

  4. Sashing: How about a small stripe cut across the stripes so that they'll frame the blocks with a yellow or gray cornerstone depending on what color the stripes are.
Borders: Your blocks are fantastic. I like the idea of a yellow inner border with the lighter fabric as an outer border so that the border doesn't overwhelm the center, which is so subtle, understated and beautiful! That's my idea, but do what YOU want and like! Sharon B in Franklin

  5. Do you need sashing? I'm seeing dark star points among some of your blocks. How big are they and how big do you want the quilt to finish? If you do use sashing, maybe something very light so even the yellows and palest greys will contrast with it. I love the black border print but only the viney part, it doesn't need the plaid part.

  6. I'd probably skip the sashing and go with a narrow black or yellow border with the gray as the final border.
