Scrappy Saturday

Brown is Beautiful

Let me first say I LOVE the One Monthly Goal (OMG).  It is really helping me stay focused and motivating me to keep my OMG project moving along.

OMG February - Smith Mountain Morning
I'm also motivated by the fact that the Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) color for February is brown!

Thus far this month I finished up 32 star center pinwheels ...

Center Pinwheel for Brown and Blue Stars
... 48 brown star points (and 80 blue points) ...

SMM Brown Star Points x 48
... and 80 brown star corners (and 48 blue ones).

Brown Corners for Blue Stars x 80
My solution to the scrappiness that I didn't like is to make scrappy pinwheel centers but keep the points and the corners consistent within a star block. Each block will have different fabrics, though.

SMM Brown Star
In contrast, the cornerstone blocks will have controlled centers and scrappy logs (mainly because I already had so many made).

SMM Alternate Cornerstone Block
All the parts for the star blocks are finished and kitted up, ready to be sewn at the Nuts and Bolts Retreat week after next.

SMM Stars Kitted Up and Ready to Sew
Next week I will finish up the quarter-square centers and strip piece logs for the cornerstone blocks.

SMM Cornerstone Block Centers
Since most of the strips for this quilt were cut several years ago, I haven't really made a dent in my brown scraps.  Time to think about what else I can do with them .....

Oh, last week I mentioned inheriting the muslin for this quilt from my mother. Well apparently one piece has a lot of polyester in it and, although I thought I had washed and ironed it before cutting, this happened ...

Shrunken Muslin
I'm hoping it will be OK to include these units in the quilt. Any thoughts?

  1. And isn't it nice that your blue-and-brown fulfills RSC for two months?

  3. Love this SMM quilt in brown and blue. It will look so good. Sorry to hear about the shrinking muslin. I had that problem too and I didn't want to take a chance so I remade the blocks. It's probably not what you want to hear but that's what I did.
    Happy sewing anyway, ;^)

  4. It looks like you are all prepared to make the most of your retreat time. As far as the shrunken muslin (is that anything like a shrunken head?), how much did they shrink? If it is under 1/4" you may still be able to use them although you will have a skimpy seam allowance. Good luck with whatever you decide. Marlene marlene@coveredinstitches.com

  5. You've got some luscious blues and browns to play with there! I hope you get lots done on your retreat. (Enjoy!)
I suspect I've got some poly content hiding away in my stash, since some of it goes back to the 60's and 70's when quilting cotton wasn't easy to find, but polycotton blends were all the rage.

  7. That's quite the production line you have set out for yourself. Enjoy the retreat weekend.

  8. The Smith Mountain is one of my favorite Bonnie Hunter quilts ever. It is going to be beautiful! I'm not sure I would trust shrinking fabric. You will be ironing again when the blocks are put together and when they are joined with the other blocks. What if it kept shrinking each time? Good luck with whatever you decide.

  10. I like how you are working with the browns and blues. Keeping some parts consistent to balance the scrappiness is a good idea and I think you have the balance spot on.
