Leading ...

... And Ending

Back in the middle of May I wrote about how Bonnie Hunter's Scrap Users Strip System doesn't work for me (read it here).  Don't misunderstand; I'm not saying that there is anything inherently wrong with her system.  It just doesn't work for me because I generally don't make scrappy quilts.

So at the time of that writing I whipped a mixed bunch of 2-1/2" strips into light/dark foursies to make Bonnie's free pattern Strip Twist.

Strip Twist
It was one of those rare occasions where I threw caution to the wind, grabbed two strips, and started sewing.  I did put a little thought into the block combinations, trying to avoid duplicate fabrics.  And I did a minimum amount of redistribution of the blocks in the final arrangement.  Overall, it was very satisfying and I find it a very cheerful quilt that will comfort someone.  With luck, this will be fully assembled by the end of this day, including two borders.

While I had the 2-1/2" strip bin out I also stitched a pile of dark/neutral strip sets which I cut into 2-1/2" chunks.

And, using Bonnie's Leader/Ender system, I worked those into 4-patches in between other sewing and then added a solid 4-1/2" square to most of them in the same manner.  I don't know about you, but at some point my L/E project demands to be finished, so last week I got most of it together.

Needs a name

Five more long seams and it will be a flimsy.  I generally kept the colors in a more masculine palette but I did let a few yellows and pinks in to make it sparkle.

I'll be linking up with Cynthia for Sunday's Oh Scrap!

  1. even though I make scrappy quilts I don't use her system to organize either because I find I don't use the same size pieces as she seems to. I like to make some bigger blocks than she does I think -- for not being a scrappy quilter you got a couple good quilts there

  2. Those are both just great, Libby! I love scrappy quilts, and these really appeal to me. I like the way you tied all the different 4 patches together with that background fabric. That's something I've had to learn about scrappy quilts - they still need some organization!

  3. What a great way to use up scraps! I have been cutting 2" squares and someday will do something with them, right?

  4. You are being such a rebel! Every once in a while throwing caution to the wind pays off! Both quilts are beauties!

  5. Very interesting quilts you have here. My question is; who are you and what have you done with Libby? Lol. ;^)

  6. I don't use her methods of storing scraps either. All of my Scrap Quilts are driven by color and require flexible cut sizes. Your quilts are coming along nicely. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!

  7. I'm like you... not that much into scrappy quilts. And leaders and enders quilts just aren't patient with me. They demand to be finished. :) Your quilts are looking good for sure!

  9. I totally understand about Bonnie's scrap user's system not working for someone who's not a scrappy quilter. Same here! Ditto with leaders and enders taking over and becoming their own priority project. I love your four patch WIP; there's something about it that reminds me of Indian corn. Beautiful fall colors with plenty of sparkle.

  10. I absolutely LOVE to use up scraps from my stash! Bonnie's system really works for me. Both of those scrappy quilts are AWESOME!!! Aren't you glad you dug into those bins???

  11. But you do make scrappy quilts -- at least, by my definition which is: a variety of prints. Scrappy can be lots of colors (the style you're not so fond of) or controlled colors (which you make often). I have tweaked the Scrap Users System to suit the way I operate. Have you read Joan Ford's Scrap Therapy books? Her standard sizes are different from Bonnie's.....I still have a box of 5" squares from the Nickel Quilts days. I was able to use a bunch of them for my current project (AKA Practicing Avoidance).

  12. Two great scrappy projects. Leaders and enders is such a great way to make progress on a scrappy quilt. I agree at some point the leaders and enders project has to take center stage and become THE project that's getting finished.
