A Question for my Peeps

When you make a quilt intended to be a wall hanging, do you wash it?

  1. In most cases NO. Only if it would benefit from the crinkly look would it be washed. Of course there could be exceptions but drying it flat and smoothed out would be necessary for me.

  2. I wash all of mine just because that is how I do it and lots of time I have blue wash out marking lines that need to be gone - just me but I think a lot of hand quilted quilts just look better washed and crinkled - now if they are machine quilted it is usually a totally different look

  4. I've done both, Libby. The smaller ones I usually don't wash, but a few years ago I made a larger quilt I wanted to hang and I thought the quilting would look better if it was washed and dried. It still hangs nice and flat even after washing.

  5. I've had to wash certain ones...as mentioned if there are markings or I've spilled something on it, which happened to me once. Generally though, I do not.

  6. If it's specifically a wall hanging, no. I might have used a stiffer batting or home dec fabric for the backing which would shrink differently than quilting cotton.
