Batiks neatly stacked above the cutting table (which is still piled high with miscellaneous projects).
Batiks and Fat Quarters |
Brown, orange, yellow, and green sorted and stacked over the layout table (which is unusable since it's always been covered with project boxes).
1/3 Done! |
One more day of sorting and restacking fabric ......
I think I'll put those miscellaneous bagged projects in the dead shelf corners. But I'm going to make a list of them first so I don't have to dig into the corners until I'm ready to work on one of them.
My big dilemma is how to organize and store scraps. I know what the wizards say, but my space is limited. I do think if I did some advance prep, like cutting strips or squares of a certain size, I would be more prone to use them.
How do my readers manage their scraps? I'm open to suggestion as long as it doesn't involve taking up a lot of space or spending a lot of money.
I use Bonnie Hunter's Scrap Users system, but I think the first question is "How small of a scrap will you use in future projects?" Congratulations on all the progress
ReplyDeleteI'm looking at some cabinetry at the Habitat Re-Store. Lots of drawers and a tall unit with cubbies. Hoping that will be my storage solution. Stay tuned!!
DeleteLooking wonderful!!! Look at all that fabric goodness - so colorful :) Doesn't it just feel good to look at them all neat and orderly? If you're like me, they won't stay that way very long. I have to do a straightening job every couple of months :)
ReplyDeleteYep, I went through this exercise right after Christmas and it didn't take long for the tornado to hit. This time, THIS TIME, I'm going to keep up with it ... I WILL ....
DeleteI love an organized sewing space! As far as scrap management goes, I have my scraps smaller than a fat quarter sorted in bins by color. when I pull a fabric from a scrap bin to cut off what is needed, it doesn't go back in the bin. I will cut whatever size strips I can get from it and put it in bins marked accordingly. I have bins for strings (3/4 to 1.25" strips), 1.5" strips, 2" strips, and 2.5" strips. When I am ready to make a quilt and need 2" strips I can just pull the bin and start sewing. I don't precut squares or any other shape.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a manageable plan. I'm looking at some cabinetry with drawers that would be good for sorting scraps by color. I have several options for the strips, just haven't been able to make a system work. But I'm determined to try. Thanks for commenting.
DeleteNot the most glamorous solution, but I buy those Zip Loc Big Bags (or the Dollar Tree equivalent) and soft by color. Then they either sit out where I can see them or go into plastic Rubbermaid totes.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could buy stock in Ziploc!! I've started cutting various size strips as I come across scraps in my cleaning. In the meantime everything is going into a large Rubbermaid tub. When I need a specific color, I'll dig for it and then bag it.
