What was she thinking?

I'll tell you

A couple of weeks ago I got the bug to try some freestyle stack-n-slash Christmas trees like those made by The Polka Dot Chicken

Within a few days I had a small cache of these lovelies.

In a search for more variety in my "Christmas" drawer, I came across some more elegant fabrics in creams and golds.  I thought it might be fun to make an "elegant" throw.

Not particularly impressed at this point, but still needing variety in my trees, I continued to make them, thinking I'd just make one larger quilt with whatever I could make with the materials at hand.

But the combination of white backgrounds with cream and the juxtaposition of elegance with cute Christmas schtick bothered me.

My ultimate decision was to separate the creams from the whites and make two quilts.

Elegant Trees
Still debating about a border.  It's currently 35" wide which would be OK for a wheelchair or a crib.

And that is what I was thinking.

Hop over to Quilting is more fun than housework to see what scrappy projects other quilters are working on.

  1. Sometimes quilt blocks just won't play nice with each other - two quilts is a good idea and each will be charming in its own way.

  2. I think your instincts were really good on this one, Libby! As much as I love scrappy quilts, I have to agree that not all Christmas scraps play well together. Your elegant trees are wonderful!

  3. I love your little forests, no matter how many you make!

  4. You're right. Mixed genres wouldn't work. Your 25-block version reminds me of an Advent calendar.

  5. Everyone needs two Christmas tree Quilts, one for the family times and one for those glamor occasions. They will both be very pretty.

  6. These trees are going to make a great quilt. I agree the white and creams don't play well together. Making two quilts was a great solution. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!

  7. PS.. I'm going to use Amy's tutorial to make some pine trees for my neighborhood. It's exactly what I was needing. Thanks so much.

  8. Your elegant trees make a beautiful quilt. A pretty dark green would make a nice frame for all that elegance.

  9. I agree... I wouldn't put the elegant ones with the cute ones either... and I do love your elegant ones. Those wonky trees are addicting. I have FQs in aqua/taupe/cream waiting for me to make another tree quilt... cause you can never have too many quilts!!!

  10. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! I love those trees. If you aren't making a wall hanging you could make a reversible quilt/table topper.

  11. I totally agree, you made the right choice to separate out the different styles. Nann's suggestion to use the 25 block version as an advent calendar is nice - you could hang one ornament on each tree each day.
