RSC19 - Chandelier Beads |
I have lost track of where this block pattern originated. If one of my readers can remind me, I'll give credit where it is due when I show it with borders.
There was discussion on a blog I was reading recently about the use of the term "flimsy" to describe an unquilted top. The objectors thought that flimsy implies low quality. What say you?

I like the restful design of your Chandelier Beads, but can't help you with the name of the designer.
ReplyDeleteLove your colorful beads! I have seen more than one pattern very similar to your beads; however, the original is probably the Chandelier quilt pattern from Charm School book by Vanessa Goertzen.
ReplyDeleteI like the word flimsy! It reminds me that it is delicate and still in need of reinforcement before it can be used! I always amazes me, how some people get hung up on words! I’m a word lover and there are lots of words that have similar meanings, and others that have opposite meaning, Enjoy the process!
ReplyDeleteI've been hearing/using the word "flimsy" for an unquilted top for many many years. It was my impression that the origin of that term usage was Canadian. Your flimsy looks great! :)
ReplyDeleteFlimsy or quilt top... I use them interchangeably and really don’t mind either term. And your chandelier flimsy is adorable! I don’t think such a basic block needs attribution, regardless of its most recent popular name.
ReplyDeleteYour chandelier beads flimsy is beautiful, Libby! I love all the color, and your background fabric is still my favorite of the year. I like Judy's thought about a quilt still being delicate at the flimsy stage, and needs more work to be ready to use!
ReplyDeleteThat's a heart thumper....
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the Chandelier Beads quilt. It's a great way to show off some beautiful printed fabric.
ReplyDeleteI like the word Flimsy. I didn't know that word before I started making quilts. To me a low quality fabric is "weak" not "flimsy". I'm with Gramma Judy B on this one. Either way, yours is beautiful. ;^)
love your beads top. can you tell me make of your background fabric? it is wonderful. the perfect compliment to this block design. imho.
ReplyDeleteI've always said "quilt top".
This is so great! I love all the color. You might skip the border and add a black binding instead. Just a thought!
ReplyDeleteSuch a nice simple block, but doesn't it look stunning set on point with all the rainbow colours. I'm thinking of maybe doing this block next year for RSC, I think it's so nice and not at all difficult. One I would certainly make and keep for us.
ReplyDeleteI'm in the quilt top camp, but have no problem with the term flimsy, meaning comparatively light and insubstantial, easily damaged (as opposed to low quality.) What are your plans for the resulting quilt?
ReplyDeleteIf I said the purse I was carrying was made flimsy, or my dress was flimsy, we’d all probably agree that what ever they were made of that they were not made well or sturdy. Flimsy carries a negative connotation in many geographical locations. I’m going with patchwork or quilt top. However, I don’t really mind that folks want to refer to the work they spent hours planning, cutting, and piecing as a ‘flimsy’. I think we get the drift. Just like I know most people who consider themselves quilters don’t actually do any quilting - they mainly do piecing. I’m good with them calling themselves quilters. They are making a quilt - they just enlist a second party to sew the layers together for them :).
