Bloggers are the Best!

Ask and you'll get an opinion

I jumped into the March Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC16) color at the last minute.

My 25 little 4" 16-patch blocks needed something to make them big enough for anything more than a doll quilt -- which wouldn't have been so bad, now that I think about it ...

After I framed them with the accent color, yellow, I went to the blogosphere for suggestions of what to do next.

Ramona at Doodlebugs and Rosebuds suggested a dark sashing, but by that point I had settled on a medium purple close to the purple in the yellow frames and with a little vine in the stripe that mimicked the vine in the frame. At least it is darker than the yellow ...

Jan at Colorful Fabriholic thought a touch of olive might be interesting (she has such a way with color!). Well, I found a yellow for the cobblestones -- thanks, Gayle, for suggesting light -- which is sprinkled with squares in various shades of purple AND a yellow-green.

Charlene at Geema's Wonderings and Ozark Cajun both suggested making stars where the sashings intersect. This is something I've been wanting to try for a long time but somehow it never comes to mind when I get to the sashing stage. Since my sashings are cut 2", I decided that a Friendship Star would be less finicky than a sawtooth star. I incorporated Jan's suggestion by using various yellow-green scraps in the Friendship Stars.

Rough Layout of Friendship Star Sashing
While Joy D had a great plan for organizing the 16-patch blocks around a center star medallion, I decided I didn't want to have to think that much on this project. But I'll certainly keep the idea in mind for the future.  In fact, Joy D, I have the perfect center star in the works so you may see your plan come together later this year.

Gayle at mangofeet voted for an on-point setting.  Great idea! Did you know that a block set on point is half again as big as a block set straight?

I have no space to show the full layout; just take my word, the rows are all together except for the longest one. Of course, now I'm faced with finding a fabric for the side setting triangles.... Any idea?

Thanks, everyone for all your suggestions!

Now on to ORANGE. I've had a love affair with orange fabric ever since I began quilting (thought I hated it before) so I should have absolutely NO problem finding scraps.

Told ya! Look what I found in my purple box.

I've got 10 of these little gems. An interesting idea is rattling the brain cells this morning. Stay tuned.

  5. this is such an interesting story. I wonder if you could use the same yellow with purple fabric that you used for the frames for the setting triangles, or would the yellow be too overpowering?

  6. Wow, I love what you've done with your blocks based on everyone's suggestions! Thanks for the shout-out and the color compliment. For setting triangles, my first suggestion would be the same yellow vine print if you have enough, or maybe you can audition a pale yellow that's very similar to the background shade in your vine print.

  7. You made good use of all the suggestions, it's going to be a gorgeous quilt. Do you have a pale yellow you could use for the setting triangles, then finish with a purple border?

  8. You've had some excellent advice and the setting is lovely. Love the purple stripe sashing and the friendship star colors. For the triangles, I agree on something that does not compete and what about a nice purple border to frame it. Go for it!

  9. LOVING where you are headed with that "collaborative" quilt! How about a nice PURPLE floral for the setting triangles? That might look nice. (Oh! and you may want to fix your links so that they don't all go to Mango Feet. Oops!)
